Making a Change
On January 1st 2019, Rakhee Madhavan, an Indian teacher from the state of Kerala, decided to show the world the true Power of One. At 3.00 PM in the afternoon she boarded a bus filled with women, and an hour later, she had initiated one of the largest ever public gatherings for the cause of gender equality in India. “The Wall of Women” consisted of between 3.5 to 5 million women lining up along India's National Highway 66 and stretching as far as 620 kilometers! Their cause? Protesting a century-long religious ban on women of menstrual age entering the Hindu temple of Sabarimala, one of the region's most sacred centers of worship.
In a matter of hours, a 39 year old teacher from Kerala had created a movement that will go down in history and contribute to lasting change for millions of Hindu women. Our goal is that #StartingWithTheSelf will drive you to do the same: Stand up for the causes you care about and realize the true power of an individual as soon as they set their mind on something.
